Keeping Your Furniture Clean

Vacuum Often

While we often think of spills and stains as the main causes of furniture damage, dust and dirt accumulation can actually be just as bad over time. Vacuuming is your first line of defense, and we recommend cleaning your furniture with your vacuum’s handheld brush attachment at least once a month. Remove any cushions and be sure to clean cracks, crevices, and other areas where debris can accumulate. If you’re having trouble getting everything using your vacuum, a lint roller could be a more effective option.

Avoid Prolonged Sun Exposure

Many homes are built to maximize the amount of natural light they receive, but this can spell disaster for artwork and furniture. The sun’s ultraviolet rays fade colors and can dry out materials, especially leather. If possible, close your blinds whenever the sun shines directly on your furniture or rotate your furniture arrangement to prevent a piece sitting in a single spot for months at a time.

Moisturize Leather

If you do notice that your leather furniture is drying out due to sun exposure or old age, you can make a leather treatment solution with a mixture of linseed oil and vinegar. Mix one part vinegar to two parts linseed oil and apply it to the dry sections using a soft cloth. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes before wiping it away with another soft cloth. As a rule of thumb, plan to moisturize leather furniture at least every six months if it’s used on a regular basis.

Check the Tag

Not all furniture can be cleaned using the same chemicals. In fact, using the wrong cleaning solution can be much more damaging than a spill or stain! Before you attempt to clean a spill or stain, check the tag for the following instructions:

  • W: This means that you can use a water-based cleaner on your furniture.
  • S: This means that your furniture cannot be cleaned with water and requires a solvent-based cleaner.
  • WX: This means that you can use either a cleaning solution with or without water.
  • X: This means that you should consult a professional cleaner. Vacuuming pieces marked with “X” is fine, but anything beyond that should be left to a professional.

Invest in Blankets

Sometimes the best way to clean a stain is to prevent it from happening in the first place. If you have pets, kids, or enjoy eating and drinking on your furniture, a strategically placed blanket or quilt could be just what you need to prevent permanent damage. Of course, you won’t want to pick a family heirloom or something too expensive, but the majority of throw blankets and quilts are much easier to clean than furniture!

Contact an Expert

If you aren’t sure about how to clean a particular piece of furniture, you can always consult the manufacturer for advice. If you purchased a piece from No Place Like Home, you can give our furniture store a call and we’ll gladly help you determine the appropriate cleaner to use with your furniture.
